Labiaplasty is an effective cosmetic surgery procedure that reshapes enlarged and irregular labia minora. Many women struggle with inner lips of the vagina that protrude out of the labia majora.

This can cause daily discomfort as these sensitive bits of skin become irritated during regular activities. However, there’s no need to suffer from rubbing, chafing, and pain during sex or exercise.

Labiaplasty is an increasingly popular surgery that can improve a woman’s overall quality of life.

Vulvas are naturally irregular and asymmetrical. However, if your lady parts are causing you pain or embarrassment, a labiaplasty can change your life for the better. You deserve to celebrate everything that makes you a woman, and Dr Grant Hamlet can help. Contact Dr. Grant Hamlet in London at 0207 127 4377

Let’s Talk About Labia

Your intimate areas should be a source of pleasure, not a source of pain or embarrassment.

Patients with enlarged labia minora endure irritation, inflammation, difficulty with personal hygiene, and pain during sex. (1)

Enlarged labia, or labial hypertrophy, can result from a variety of factors:

  • Pregnancy
  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Injury

A labiaplasty surgery restores comfort and confidence. Besides the physical discomfort, having problematic labia can cause significant psychological effects. If you’ve experienced this, know that you’re not alone. Many women with labia minora hypertrophy or asymmetry report struggles with self-consciousness, anxiety, and feeling abnormal. This can lead to trouble in the bedroom, and in the dressing room. A labiaplasty can let you feel comfortable wearing tight jeans, yoga pants, or a bathing suit. It can also vastly improve your sex life and confidence. For many women, labiaplasty can improve the labial appearance and may also provide psychological and functional improvements.(1)

Benefits of Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is safe and effective. A review of studies conducted from 1971 through 2014 reported that labiaplasty satisfaction rates always exceeded 90%! Complications only occurred in 6.8% of the patients. However, none of the complications were serious and were easily resolved. Labiaplasty patients have reported major improvements in their sex lives. Besides eliminating painful intercourse, women who have undergone labiaplasties describe improved self-esteem. (2) It’s just easier to feel sexy when you know you have a fabulous fanny!

Candidates

Labiaplasty is an elective procedure, but like all surgical procedures, candidates should take it seriously. Women who are suffering discomfort from their labia will benefit from this procedure. Many women have had significant labial changes after having babies. For some, however, irregular labia majora or minora are simply hereditary. Candidates for labiaplasty should be past the age of puberty, and not currently pregnant. Dr Hamlet will determine whether you are a good candidate for a labiaplasty and discuss the risks with you during your personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

Your labiaplasty consultation is private and discreet. Dr Hamlet makes every effort to ensure that you are completely comfortable discussing your treatment. Dr Hamlet will also use this time to assess your overall physical health and expectations for surgery. Together, you’ll address the specific issues that concern you.

Your labiaplasty will be specifically designed to eliminate the symptoms and discomfort that you’ve experienced. Dr Hamlet will go over the steps of the procedure and the various surgical options that best suit your needs. As always, Dr Hamlet will take your personal goals into consideration to recommend the best course of action.

During your personal consultation, you will receive a detailed breakdown of the treatment and its cost.

Preparation

Dr. Grant Hamlet will give you a complete set of guidelines to follow to ensure your procedure goes as smoothly as possible.

Before your labiaplasty:

  • Stop smoking at least 2-3 weeks before
  • Stop taking certain medications, especially those that thin the blood
  • Arrange for a ride home from surgery
  • Plan to wear comfortable clothes for the day of your procedure and that the clothes you wear home after your surgery won’t irritate the skin

Procedure

Labiaplasty surgery is often completed in less than one hour, so it is an outpatient procedure. You’ll be able to return home immediately after your treatment. Before your procedure begins, Dr Hamlet will apply local or general anaesthesia to ensure that you feel no discomfort. During your consultation, Dr Hamlet will recommend the best kind of anaesthesia and incision for your case.

There are two main types of incision techniques: the trim and the wedge.

Trim Labiaplasty

This method is a simple solution if the patient’s labia minora is only slightly larger than her labia majora. The free edges of the labia minora are trimmed to create a proportional vulva. Excess skin is snipped away from the labia and the edges are sutured. Women that are unhappy with dark labial edges appreciate how this technique removes the darker-coloured skin, and gives them a vibrant, pinker labia minora.

Wedge Labiaplasty

During a wedge resection, the doctor removes a wedge-shaped piece of tissue from the labia. This is similar to tailoring a garment, and the edges of the labia remain intact for a natural, organic appearance.  After the excess tissue is removed, absorbable sutures close the incisions and the procedure is complete.

There is minimal discomfort associated with a labiaplasty, and the sutures used to close incisions will dissolve on their own, so you won’t have to endure the discomfort of having your stitches removed.

Recovery

Although the final results won’t be visible for a few months after your surgery, most patients are able to return to work or light daily activity after about 2-5 days.

You will experience some mild post-op pain in the area and will be given medication to soothe the symptoms after your surgery. Swelling and bruising are normal but subside after a few days. Ice can be used to reduce the discomfort associated with any swelling.

Topical moisturizers and cooling sprays are available to help relieve irritation or itching that may occur as you heal. Running warm water over this region as you urinate can ease discomfort.

During your recovery:

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing and underwear
  • Do not use tampons until Dr Hamlet tells you that it is safe to do so
  • Abstain from sexual activity for about six weeks after surgery
  • Avoid pools and hot tubs until you are cleared to do so
  • Avoid activities that can irritate the incision site such as long periods of sitting, scratching or pulling

Dr Hamlet will be able to address any concerns and monitor your healing process during your post-op appointment.

Results

Because labiaplasties have very low complication rates and high satisfaction rates, you can safely look forward to results that improve your quality of life. Every vulva is unique, but an ideal labiaplasty results in labia that literally and figuratively don’t get in the way! Labia that no longer interfere allow women to enjoy everyday activities, wear what they please, and feel beautiful.

Complementary Procedures

If your pregnancy caused changes in your labia, it’s probably not the only difference you’ve noticed after having your little bundle of joy. You probably won’t get a lot of compliments on your labiaplasty, but you sure will from a Mommy Makeover! Dr Hamlet can help you get your pre-baby body back with a breast uplift, a tummy tuck, or some liposuction. FAQ

How do I know if a labiaplasty is right for me?

If your labia cause you discomfort during everyday activities or sex, a labiaplasty may be a good procedure for you. Labial hypertrophy can affect your confidence and your health. Candidates for labiaplasty are women that are past puberty, and in good health. During your personal consultation, Dr Hamlet will be able to assess your candidacy for a labiaplasty.

How soon can I have sex after a labiaplasty?

Every woman heals at a different rate, but patients will need to refrain from vaginal sex for at least 6 weeks after a labiaplasty. Patients will also need to avoid tampons until the doctor gives them the go-ahead.

Are labiaplasties safe?

Labiaplasties have been performed since the 1970’s, and a study of patient results reported no serious complications. These procedures usually take under an hour, making them an out-patient procedure, so patients get to return home the same day. Another study found that 90% of patients were satisfied with their results.
