Good Candidates

You may be considered an ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery if you are a woman experiencing physical or emotional distress due to your chest size. This includes individuals with disproportionately large breasts, significant breast asymmetry, or those seeking relief from symptoms such as chronic pain, postural issues, or limited physical activity. Eligible patients should be in good general health and hold realistic expectations regarding the surgical outcomes.

Your Consultation

Your private consultation with Dr. Grant Hamlet is a foundational step in your breast reduction journey, designed to foster a trusting relationship and ensure a fully personalised approach. This dedicated meeting provides an invaluable opportunity to connect with one of our highly trained and qualified surgeons, who is committed to understanding your unique needs and aspirations.

Before your consultation, please be prepared to share the following:

  • Any medical conditions or treatments or drug allergies.
  • Current medications, herbal supplements, vitamins, alcohol, tobacco, and drug use.
  • Previous surgeries.

During your consultation, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of breast reduction surgery, including its intricate details and how it can positively impact your life. To help you visualise potential outcomes and understand what to expect, you’ll be able to review before and after photos of previous breast reduction patients. Your surgeon will conduct a thorough examination of your chest and discuss your complete medical history, alongside your desired aesthetic and functional goals. This is also your ideal opportunity to voice any thoughts, questions, or concerns you may have about breast reduction surgery and to enquire about your surgeon’s qualifications and extensive experience.

Should breast reduction surgery be identified as the most suitable and healthy solution for your concerns, you and the surgeon will collaboratively create a tailored treatment plan, meticulously designed to harmonise with your body and achieve your desired outcome.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

Before your breast reduction surgery, Dr. Hamlet may ask you to do the following:

  • Stop smoking.
  • Get a medical evaluation and lab testing.
  • Cease taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory meds, herbal supplements, or other medications that have the potential to increase bleeding.
  • Twelve hours before your surgery, you will need to fast.
  • Get a good night’s rest and ensure you have a ride to and from the appointment.
  • Arrive a few minutes early so you can sign in and change at your own pace.

Breast reduction surgery is a precise procedure performed under general anaesthesia to ensure your complete comfort and safety. Once you are sedated, Dr. Hamlet will make carefully predetermined incisions on your breasts. Through these incisions, excess breast tissue, fat (often with the aid of liposuction), and skin are meticulously removed and contoured to achieve your desired breast size and shape.

When the desired volume is achieved, the surgeon will place drains and close the incisions. Drains help ensure a secure closure of the breast pocket, preventing complications such as hematomas.[2]

The procedure typically lasts between two to five hours, with the exact duration depending on your unique physique and the extent of the reduction required to achieve your desired results.

Breast Reduction Techniques

Dr. Hamlet employs various advanced incision techniques and supplementary methods during breast reduction surgery, each selected to best suit your anatomy and aesthetic goals while prioritising minimal scarring.

Circular Incision (SPAIR method)

This technique, often referred to as the SPAIR method[1], involves an incision made around the areola, with minimal additional incisions. It is typically used for moderate reductions and is favoured for its ability to minimise visible scarring, making it a less invasive option.

Keyhole Incision

Also known as the vertical incision, this technique involves a circular incision around the areola combined with a vertical cut extending from the areola down to the breast fold. This approach provides Dr. Hamlet with greater access to breast tissue, allowing for more significant reduction and reshaping, while still keeping scarring relatively contained.

Inverted-T Incision

This is an extension of the keyhole method, adding a horizontal incision along the breast fold to the circular and vertical cuts, forming an “anchor” shape. The Inverted-T incision is used for more pronounced breast enlargement, offering the most extensive access to tissue for substantial reduction and significant reshaping.

Your surgeon may use one of the above incisions or a combination of them to deliver your best results. Liposuction is sometimes incorporated into the breast reduction procedure to seamlessly reduce extra breast fat. A breast reduction surgery will give you lifted and rejuvenated breasts for years to come.

Recovery

Recovery from any procedure depends on the duration and extent of the surgery and the health of the patient. Be sure to ask Dr. Hamlet any questions regarding post-op procedures, dressings/bandages, stitches, medications, follow-up care, and when you can resume normal activities. He’ll be happy to make sure that you have all the information you need.

Following breast reduction surgery, you can expect some initial swelling and tenderness in the treated area. Dr. Hamlet will prescribe appropriate medication to help you manage any discomfort effectively. You will be advised to wear a compression garment or a supportive bra for several weeks, which aids in adjustment, controls swelling, and supports the healing tissues. Engaging in brief, gentle walks is encouraged to boost circulation and promote healing, but strenuous activities should be avoided until you are fully recovered. Most patients can typically return to work after about a week, though individual recovery times vary. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to ensure proper healing and monitor your progress, with final results developing over a few months as swelling fully dissipates.

Complementary Procedures

Breast reductions are often combined with breast uplifts. Reducing tissue may not be enough to restore your breasts to your preferred contours. An uplift will help position the chest to a higher, youthful trajectory and provide a more pleasing shape to the remaining breast tissue. A combined reduction and uplift will give you smaller, perkier breasts.

Breast enhancement procedures are often incorporated into our comprehensive mommy makeover package. If you are interested in rejuvenating your physique in response to a recent pregnancy, Dr. Grant Hamlet can help.

FAQs

Is breast reduction surgery painful?

You will be asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure. Anaesthetic and sedation will be administered for your comfort. Afterwards, you may experience minor swelling and/or tightness. However, you can alleviate these with pain medications. You should not require prescription medications for more than a few days. The breast reduction recovery period may be uncomfortable but should not be excessively painful. If you experience pain for a long period of time, contact your surgeon.

Breast reduction surgery, like all surgeries, carries risk but has an excellent safety record. These surgeries should only be performed by qualified, licensed cosmetic surgeons with ample experience.
